Frequently Asked Questions
Honest answers to the things people ask before booking.
How does the £55 first hour work?
The first hour is £55 and includes getting to you if you're within five miles of Cirencester. It's the minimum charge, so it's worth saving up a few small jobs for one visit. After that it's £35 an hour, charged in half-hours. So a 90-minute visit is £55 + £17.50 = £72.50.
What is the £35 hourly rate after the first hour?
After the first hour, every additional half hour is charged at £17.50, which works out at £35 per hour. I'll round honestly. If a job runs five minutes over, you will not be charged for an extra half hour.
Is there a call-out charge?
No. There's no separate charge on top of the £55 first hour, which already includes getting to you if you're within five miles of Cirencester.
Can I have several small jobs done in one visit?
Yes, that's how most visits work. Make a list and I'll work through it. Got a longer list? A half day (4 hours) is £125 and a full day (8 hours) is £230.
Do you do gas or electrical work?
No gas work, no rewiring, no fuse box changes and no electrical work that needs certifying. I change bulbs and lampshades, but anything involving wiring goes to a qualified electrician, and I can recommend one.
What areas do you cover?
Travel within five miles of Cirencester town centre is included in the first hour. Further out, I charge 45p for each mile beyond the first five, there and back. For Tetbury that's roughly £5 a visit. I also cover South Cerney, Siddington, Kemble, Ampney Crucis, Fairford, Lechlade, Tetbury, Northleach, Bibury, Chedworth and Ashton Keynes.
Are you DBS-checked and insured?
Yes. I have a basic DBS check. I carry £2 million public liability insurance, and it covers the jobs I do in your home, errands, and driving you to appointments. You can see the certificate on my About page, and I'm happy to show you both at the door.
Can I arrange and pay for a visit to my parent?
Yes. You can arrange the visit by phone from anywhere and pay by bank transfer afterwards. I'll send you a short note of what I did after each visit.
Do you fit grab rails and keysafes?
Yes. Grab rails are fitted with the right anchors for the wall (timber, stud, plasterboard, brick, tile) and load-tested before I leave. Keysafes are mounted in a sensible spot and the code is handed to whoever needs it.
Can you collect prescriptions and do shopping?
Yes. Collecting prescriptions is one of my most common errands, and I'm happy to do a top-up or a full weekly shop. I'll bring everything into the kitchen.
How quickly can you come?
Most weeks I can come within 2 to 5 working days. If something urgent comes up, like storm damage, call me and I'll do my best to come sooner. There's no extra charge for an urgent visit. For a burst pipe or a bad leak, call a plumber first.
How do I pay?
Bank transfer for most visits, cash for jobs under £100, or a card on my card reader. I send an invoice after every visit, by email or on paper, payable within seven days.
What if I need to bring in a specialist?
I'll tell you straight away, and the usual charge for the visit still applies. I'll recommend someone local who's right for the job. I'd rather lose the work than do it badly.
Do you work weekends?
Standard hours are Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 17:00. Weekends are family time.
What does a typical visit look like?
I arrive at the agreed time, walk through your list with you, agree an order, and get started. Most visits last one to three hours and mix practical jobs with an errand or two. I finish with a quick cup of tea and a written note of what I did.
