Chedworth is a scattered village in a valley about eight miles north of Cirencester. People know it for the Roman Villa, but the village itself is quiet, rural, and full of the kind of older cottages that always have a list of things needing doing.
The lanes are narrow, which means I need to allow a bit of extra time for the drive up. But when I get there the work is rewarding. Older residents who are glad to see a familiar face, stone walls that take good fixings, and jobs that range from smoke alarm batteries to a spot of painting to sitting in for a delivery while someone is at the hospital.
Travel and pricing
Chedworth is outside the free zone. Mileage at 45p per mile applies. First hour £55, then £35 an hour. A half-day booking works well for trips up the valley.
